How Mate Gratuity Works

On a charter boat, the first mate is traditionally paid through gratuity — not a salary. The customary rate is 20% of the charter price, handed directly to the mate at the end of your trip. It works the same way as tipping a server at a restaurant.

12hr Offshore $3,600 charter + ~$720 mate gratuity = ~$4,320 expected
30hr Overnight $4,800 charter + ~$960 mate gratuity = ~$5,760 expected

Gratuity is not billed on the invoice — plan to bring it in cash, check, or on card at the dock. Split it across the group however you like.

Cancellation Policy

What to Know

  • Trips cancelled by the charter due to weather are rescheduled within the current year or carried forward to next year.
  • Customer cancellations over 21 days prior to the trip receive full refunds.
  • Customer cancellations within 21 days forfeit deposits if the slot cannot be filled.
